"I moved to Houston in January 2010 after living in Fairbanks, Alaska for three years. My job search started in all the usual places like newspapers and Craigslist but I added Twitter to the mix and as soon as I did that I realized that there are a lot of opportunities for contract work. I stumbled across Werkadoo in one of my late-night online internet "job search" crawls. I fired off an email and heard back from Teddy early the next morning. I had met with the potential client, his partner, and booked the job within ten days.
I was impressed with the Werkadoo site and concept immediately. Since I already had a couple of "contract" or freelance jobs it was really my Werkadoo experience that started me thinking about taking on that kind of employment full-time. My husband and I love to travel, and he will travel for his job as an exploration geologist, so freelance/gig work compliments our lifestyle. I worked from home in Alaska and I enjoyed the freedom it gave me to travel the state, explore the community, and engage in new hobbies (like my serious cross-country skiing addiction).
Werkadoo matches skills with a project rather than a person with a "job" so it immediately seemed more intuitive to me than just submitting a resume for a job with a description that you think "might" be right . I've stopped thinking of myself as an employee - I no longer work "for" but "with" and that suits me much better. I feel like I'm interviewing clients as much as they are interviewing me which gives me a sense of self-confidence and independence that is seriously lacking from the interviewer/interviewee relationship. As for the work - I work hard. Working from home or remotely or as a contract employee isn't "easy". People who want to get paid while watching "Ellen" should avoid real freelance or contract work. I probably work more now than I ever did but it's because I want to and I'm drive to - I like the projects I am working on so I work hard to make them better. Six months or a year down the road I want clients to think "I should call Christina again - she'd be perfect for this." Werkadoo puts that ball into motion by giving people like me a place to connect with employers who need people like me."
